Ph.D Students in CSS

Ph.D Students in CSS have two different ways to get involved with the program:

Ph.D Affiliation

If you're a Ph.D Student who does Computational Social Science work, and want to be invited to events, be visible to students and faculty looking for people who do computational work, and get more involved with the program, CSS Affiliation is the right choice for you. See our CSS Affiliation Page for details.

All CSS Ph.D. Affiliates are also eligible to participate in our M.S. Mentorship Program

*Note that CSS Affiliation is open to any student of any year, in any department, with any degree program, but unlike the specialization, comes without any official recognition of your degree.

Ph.D Specialization

If you're a CSS Scholar through and through, and want to get formal recognition of this, CSS Affiliated students can go a step further and officially join our Ph.D. Specialization program as you prepare to advance to candidacy. The CSS Specialization supplements social science Ph.D. curricula with technical coursework and practice leveraging modern computational modeling methods and large naturalistic datasets. These skills, in turn, deepen understanding of the core theories and applications of their home department field, and provide marketable, technical, project-based expertise that can be applied to problems across academic, public sector, NGO, and business worlds.

The CSS Ph.D. Specialization is a formal UCSD degree specialization on top of your Social Sciences Ph.D (e.g. Linguistics with a Specialization in CSS), and precludes any other specialization program. You are eligible to formally join our specialization around the same time you form your dissertation committee and advance to candidacy, generally in your third year.
