M.S. Mentorship Program

CSS facilitates a mentorship program designed to match students in the one-year CSS M.S. Program with computationally minded Ph.D. students at UC San Diego. This program is open to Ph.D. students both in and outside of CSS Ph.D. Specialization.

CSS Graduate Mentors are expected to:

  • Mentor 1 incoming Computational Social Science M.S. graduate student for 1 academic year

  • Provide peer-to-peer advice on academics, career, social life, getting involved with research, and offer support to help them transition into graduate school at UC San Diego

  • Meet with their mentee at least once per month and do their best to be available for their mentee in times of need

In return for their work, if matched with a student, mentors will get:

  • $500.00 per student for serving as a mentor (if open to working with multiple students, and are chosen by more than one)

  • Valuable mentorship experience (which should be listed on their CV!)

  • Connection with our Computational Social Science community

  • Exclusive invitations to our CSS Community Events

We also ask that mentors participate in the CSS Mentorship Fair, which will take place early in Fall quarter of each academic year. At the mentorship fair,  you'll tell prospective mentees about yourself and your work, and then you'll have some time to chat with mentees over food and beverages. As a part of this, you'll be expected to give a 5-10 minute presentation (verbal, whiteboard, or slide-based) on the kinds of academic work that you do, whether from your dissertation, another major assignment in your program, or with your advisor.

The Computational Social Science Mentorship Program Guide contains additional details and guidelines.

If you are a Ph.D. student interested in serving as a mentor for the upcoming academic year, please submit the mentorship interest form. Please reach out to css-advising-g@ucsd.edu with any questions.
